Intent

What is your intent? Intent is the key to achieving your goals. Frequently we are doing one thing—thinking that we are creating another. We need to systematically focus on the intent of our actions at every step. There is nothing wrong with multitasking, which seems necessary with today’s demands. However, balancing multitasking with intentional activity provides valuable insight into the benefits of doing one thing at a time, being totally present with the task of our intent.

Intent is often considered the cornerstone of Zen tradition of Buddhism—wherein one develops the stillness and sharpness of mind to do one thing at a time. Intent can be applied to every action you take, from the moment you wake up to the end of your day can be lived with intent. When we focus on our intent we discover that being aware of what we truly intend, is highly subjective and necessary to reach our full potential. There are many tasks we perform each day, which are rote—those tasks we do without thinking—brushing your teeth, shower, grooming, eating breakfast and commuting to work. While these tasks are rote, we have a subconscious mindset of intent.

Using this subconscious mindset—you can apply intent to any situation by saying to yourself, “I am aware that I am alive.” “I am awake I am eating breakfast,” etc. Using this simple exercise will assist you in bringing your intent for all activities fully into your conscious mind. As you acknowledge what you are doing every moment, you will come alive in your body and to the world. Owning your actions, instead of habitually doing tasks in a rote fashion with the hope they will lead you to goal achievement, will improve your success rate exponentially.

You will also realize how often you act without intention and how this disengages you from reality. Applying the energy of intent to one task a day has the power to transform that experience. Imagine how quickly you would be able to transform your life if you applied the power of intent to every facet of your life every day.
